GASPAR
I was an animal of no use
And so was treated with abuse
Chains circled my neck like a noose
I knew that I would never get loose
I thought that I would surely die
It would end my fears and cries
I don’t know when or how or why
A gentle face looked in my eyes
Sweetest Golden, come with me
You are so frightened, I can see
It’s safe here, you can eat and sleep
You are rescued now for keeps
Gone are days of pain and strife
Your future here is warm and bright
You will heal ... I’ll be your guide
And that is how you save a life.
SPEEDY
The day dawned quite chilly in early December
For Speedy a day he will surely remember
A hungry stray Golden up in Navajo land
He desperately hunted for scraps from a can
Martha and family were up for a visit
When suddenly she told them stop for a minute
A Golden she spotted, he’s not far away
We can’t leave him here, this sweet castaway
This dog needs our help, he’s got wounds on his skin
The poor thing is starving, he’s weak and he’s thin
This is my mission, my new-found campaign
It’s off to the shelter - High Country Humane
The folks at High Country took care of this guy
But Martha could not summon words of goodbye
She called Rescue A Golden, said what can I do?
This boy needs a home and good care and some food
So RAGofAZ did what all rescuers do
Gave Speedy a chance at a life that was new
No matter that our volunteers drove for hours
We’re just so happy that Speedy is ours
So please be like Martha and don’t look away
When you see an animal lost and afraid
Your heart will be full for you know you did right
And that is, as always, how you save a life
PENNY
One day a desperate call came in
My poor dog’s dying, weak and thin
Her legs are lame ... lumps on her skin
If you can’t save her, it’s the end
Carried off in big strong arms
The doctor hid her quiet alarm
Her words instead were warm and calm
To this sweet girl will come no harm
Her condition is rather rare
Sometimes life is so unfair
It’ll take time and lots of care
But day by day we’ll get her there
This brave girl’s the fighting type
And so she overcame her strife
All her dreams were realized
And that is how you save a life
HENDRIX
My name is Hendrix, howdy do
I’m very pleased to meet you too
This is Mom and she’s the best
Life is good, yes I’ve been blessed
What’s that you say, my Mom needs what?
Surgery? Oh man, that’s tough
Can’t leave her now, she is so dear
And I’ve been with her all ten years
With tearful eyes, Mom held my face
I fell into her warm embrace
“I can’t care for you for long
Hendrix, we must both be strong”
So Mom did what all good moms do
She called a rescue that she knew
“It breaks my heart to see him go
But help me find him a new home.”
I saw her as she waved goodbye
I didn’t quite know how to cry
Some kindly humans hugged me close
Rubbed my ears and kissed my nose
Now I have a new address
And I can see it’s for the best
It took some time to settle down
But smiles since have replaced my frown
I sometimes give a backward glance
But rescue was my second chance
My Golden heart had lots of room
And like a flower I have bloomed
To everyone who worked this rescue
All I’ll say is “thank you, thank you”
I won’t forget that fateful drive
‘Cause that is how you save a life
MELODY
I had a home once, this I know
For I was born in Mexico
Those people moved, left me for good
No drink or tiny crumb of food
So frightening to be left alone
My body turned to skin and bone
I couldn’t bark, could only cry
I thought oh please don’t let me die
And then it happened! An angel came
She touched my face and said my name
Don’t be afraid, you’re safe she said
And laid me in a warm soft bed
You are sick and so malnourished
But in your new home you will flourish
I will stay here by your side
And that is how you save a life
PEARL & HER PUPPIES ...
T’WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE PUPPIES
T’was the night of her due date
And all through Pearl’s tummy
Eight puppies were ready
To make Mom feel crummy
“I’m birthing my babies!”
Pearl loudly exclaimed
“I’d better get moving
and think of some names”
On Anna and Trixie
And Sissy and Dewey
On Honey and Amber
And Cory and Cooper
Then eight little fluff balls
Lined up at Pearl’s belly
“These guys seem to think
I’m their own special deli!”
She fed them and loved them
Her sweet precious pups
But the day finally came
When her “mom time” was up
She licked them goodbye
As they left for their homes
Pearl thought “Hey it ain’t bad
To have time alone”
New people, new houses
For some a new name
As for Pearl - she is done
Playing motherhood games
So, just a reminder
As we all slap high fives
That’s how you save Momma
And eight little lives
