Speedy’s story is, sadly, not uncommon. A lonely stray dog in upstate Arizona, he seemed to have been doomed to a life of fear and misery. But one fateful day, Speedy was saved by a small team of dedicated rescuers including our longtime supporter, Martha McSally. While Martha was traveling with her sister and brother-in-law, they pulled into a gas station where they made an unexpected discovery - a Golden Retriever, hungry, helpless, and homeless. And just like that, the trio abandoned their vacation plans to instead save an abandoned dog.
Martha has offered us an incredible opportunity to raise even more funds to help other Goldens recover from neglect, injury, and illness.
She will match all contributions made in Speedy’s honor between November 20th through the 26th until we reach $2000.00! Let’s celebrate Thanksgiving by offering a donation in honor of every person who has had the courage to help a needy animal, to offer respite, to not look away. On behalf of Speedy, we extend our profound thanks to our friend Martha and her family for their kindness and generosity.
HOW SPEEDY WAS SAVED
The morning broke chilly, it was late in November
For Speedy a day he will surely remember
A hungry stray dog up in Navajo land
Desperately hunting for scraps from a can
Martha and family were up for a visit
A quick stop for gas ... but then “hey, wait a minute”
They’d spotted a Golden, he’s right over there
We can’t leave him here, that would be so unfair
This dog needs our help, he’s got wounds on his skin
The poor thing is starving, he’s weak and he’s thin
And suddenly all the vacation plans changed
It’s off to the shelter - High Country Humane
The folks at High Country took care of this guy
But Martha could not summon words of goodbye
She called Rescue A Golden, said what can I do?
This boy needs a home and good care and good food
So RAGofAZ did what all rescuers do
Gave Speedy a chance at a life that was new
No matter that our volunteers drove for hours
We’re just so happy that Speedy is ours
So please be like Martha and don’t look away
When you see an animal lost and afraid
Your heart will be full for you know you did right
And that is, as always, how you save a life
